FORT LAUDERDALE, FL - Gene Muia of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, passed away Thursday, February 4, 2016, at the age of 86. Gene was born November 27, 1929, in South Bend, Indiana. He worked as a bricklayer until forming Muia Construction in 1957. Gene married his wife Carol in February of 1952. He then entered the US Army serving in Seoul, Korea, as a Corporal in the Military Police. While serving his country he earned a Korean Service Ribbon with 2 Bronze Service Stars, a National Defense Service Medal, a United Nations Service Medal and a Unit Commendation. Their oldest daughter was born while he was in Korea followed by the birth of their twins in 1958. Gene retired to Fort Lauderdale in 1984 where he enjoyed many hours on the golf course with his buddies. Gene was preceded in death by his daughter, Sharon. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Carol, his oldest daughter, Mary Dwors (Bob), Sharon's twin sister, Susan Wood (Larry), grandchildren, Sara O'Malley (Rob), Liz Gralnik (David), Brooke Jarkesy (Nick), Kristen Craig (Jon) and great-grandchildren, Keely and Kelsey Jarkesy and Draw, Jamey and Alex Tyson. He has one surviving sister, Patricia Druley. Donations may be made to the ‘Wounded Warrior Project' or the ‘Paralyzed Veterans of America.'Published in South Bend Tribune on Feb. 11, 2016
