Joan F. Gondek, 84, of South Bend, Indiana passed away at 3:47 a.m. Monday, March 6, 2023, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend, after a brief illness. Joan was born on April 13, 1938, in South Bend, Indiana to Stanley and Anastasia (Dylewski) Sikorski, and was a lifelong resident. On May 6, 1961, in Holy Family Church, Joan married James E. Gondek, her life-long love, who preceded her in death in 2018. Her parents, and sister Dolores (Sikorski) Kalil also preceded her in death. Joan will be missed by her nieces & nephew; Jean (Brendan) Crumlish, Karen Miller, and Joseph Kalil. Also missing Joan are her five great-nieces: Vivian Crumlish, Dorothy Crumlish, Kari Miller, Kami Miller, Kori (Zachary) Richardson, their children as well as many dear cousins and friends. Joan graduated St. Joseph’s High School in 1955. After high school, she graduated from Holy Cross Central School of Nursing, Notre Dame, Indiana. As a Registered Nurse she began working at St. Joseph Hospital, and later worked in private medical practices. In addition, she earned her real estate license and worked for several local real estate companies. Throughout her life Joan applied her elegance and precision to all she did, whether it be home decorating, fashion, or entertaining. Whether for family, friends or charity events, she was a gracious hostess who made sure all guests felt welcome. She brought this sophistication and style to everything and everyone around her. Joan had many hobbies, a knack for thrifting, was a thoughtful gift giver, and was an ardent dog lover. A visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 12, 2023, at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 North Bendix Drive, where a rosary will be prayed at 5:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 13, 2023, in Christ the King Catholic Church, 52473 State Hwy 933, South Bend. A visitation will also be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 13th in Christ the King Church preceding the mass.
