MISHAWAKA, IN - Gazella Julia Simmons, 96, of Mishawaka, passed away Thursday, March 10, at Golden Living Center of Mishawka. Gazella was born Dec. 11, 1919, to the late Daniel and Julia (Solomon) Papp in South Bend. On Sept. 21, 1951, she married Clifton Simmons in South Bend. He preceded her in death, passing away in 1967. A strong and independent woman, Gazella never remarried and raised their four children on her own. Surviving are her children, Marsha Simmons of Mishawaka, Michael (Danielle) Simmons of Cassopolis, Mich., and Cheryl Covey of Elkhart. She is also survived by her siblings, Louise (Joe) Oran of California, Julie (Jack) Brooks of Tennessee and Phyllis (Ed) Mannion of California; along with five grandchildren, Julie King, Michael Simmons Jr., Casey Simmons, Cliff Simmons III, and Kegan Warren; and her great-grandchildren, Donnie, Breanna, Samuel and Clowie King. Her son, Clifton E. Simmons Jr., preceded her in death. Gazella was a homemaker and worked with Continental Can Co. for a short time. She loved to spend time outdoors in her garden, bird watching and growing flowers. She was also a former member of the Ladies Auxillary of the Elkhart DAV. Visitaton was for two hours prior to the 1 p.m. funeral service Tuesday, March 15, at Walley Mills Zimmerman Funeral Home in Elkhart. Elkhart Cremation Service assisted with cremation following the service.
