SOUTH BEND- James D. Metz, 59, passed away Monday, March 9, 2009 at 4:05 p.m. in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend. James was born on April 18, 1949 in South Bend to George K. and Rosemary B. (Piechocki) Metz. On August 21, 1971 he married Donna M. (Langel) in St. Stephen Catholic Church in South Bend. She survives alond with their two children, Rev. Bradley J. Metz, C.S.C. of South Bend, and Christie M. (Steven) Hough of Princton, MN; a grandson due on April 12, 2009; parents, George and Rosemary Metz of South Bend; his sister, Janice (Rick) Verwilst of Niles, MI; his brother, Joseph (Kim) Metz of South Bend; two sister-in-laws, Barbara Radecki, and Sandra (Randolph) Worlf; and by many nieces and nephews. James worked for the South Bend Community School Corporation for his entire career, where he began as a teacher at German Elementary School and then became an Elementary School Principal for Tarkington Elementary School, Monroe Elementary School, Madison Elementary School, Hay Elementary School, and most recently at Warren Primary School. He was a member and past President of South Bend Community Schools Principal Association, member and past President of Warren Township Lions Club, and Knights of Columbus Council 5570. He was a drummer with the Esquires Band for twenty-four years. James was a parishioner of Holy Family Catholic Church. Visitation will be on Monday, March 16, 2009 from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road, where a Rosary will be prayed at 4:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. in Holy Family Catholic Church. Entombment will follow in Guardian Angels Mausoleum, St. Joseph Cemetery, South Bend. Friends and family may also gather from 9:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home prior to the Mass. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions in memory of James D. Metz, to The Public Education Foundation, Inc., P.O. BOX 119, South Bend, IN 46624, or to the Mayo Clinic for the research of CIDP in Neurology.
