On December 30, 2021, Audrey Kern passed away at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was 90 years old. Audrey was born to Icle and Joseph Mell in New Carlisle, IN and spent her entire life in the little town that she loved. She graduated from New Carlisle High School in 1949 and on April 29, 1950, she married Dwain Evans Kern, also of New Carlisle. Together they had three daughters. Preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, she was also preceded by brothers Jack, Joseph and Robert Mell and sisters Barbara Tolmen, Gloria Layman and Judie Klute. Her surviving siblings are brothers Jerry Mell and Thomas Keen, and sisters Carole Bragg and Pam Keen-DeYoung, along with many nieces and nephews. Audrey is also survived by daughters Donna Clark (John Colanese) of Hudson Lake, IN, Marcia Kern (Shep Lovick) of New Carlisle, IN, and Laurel Kern of Kalamazoo, MI, along with five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. As her daughters we realize we are better people because of her. Our mom was such a good mom- always supportive and there for us, helping us raise our kids and sometimes even our pets. Her presence meant “home” to us. Kind, caring, non-judgmental and compassionate, she always provided us with a safe space to be ourselves. As tiny as she was, she left us with some big shoes to fill.
