Mary S. Romano, 80, of South Bend, passed away on Saturday April 15, 2023 at Memorial Hospital, South Bend. She was born on March 15, 1943, in Grand Rapids, MI, to the late Andrew and Dorothy (Burton) Metz. She moved to this area in 1970. On May 12, 1970, as Mary Metz, she married Pasquale Romano, who survives. Also surviving are her daughter, Lisa (John) Wachowiak of Edwardsburg, MI, her son Joseph (Nessa) Romano of Orlando, FL, four grandchildren, Joseph and Emily Wachowiak and Ariana and Vincent Romano, sisters-in-law; Teresa Agostino, Carmela Monteleone and Francesca Aversa and by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, John "Joe" Metz. Mrs. Romano worked as a Telephone Operator for long distance calls for General Telephone and Romano's Lounge for four years. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, where she volunteered and she also volunteered at Memorial Hospital. Mary was a loving wife, mother and devoted grandmother. A visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday April 18, 2023 at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Dr., where a Parish Rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday April 19, 2023 at Holy Cross Church, with entombment to follow at Highland Cemetery, South Bend.
