SOUTH BEND - Eldon L. Watts Sr., 83, passed away after an extended illness at 7 a.m. Tuesday, March 21, in Miller's Merry Manor Nursing Center, New Carlisle, IN. Mr. Watts was born on April 2, 1922, in North Manchester, IN, and had resided in the Michiana area his lifetime. On July 19, 1949, in Osceola, IN, he married the former Dorothy M. Nice, who preceded him in death on May 26, 1984. He is survived by two daughters, Dorothy (Jim) Vanderhegghen of South Bend and Tina M. (James) Kruszewski of South Bend; four sons, Eldon L. (Darlene) Watts Jr., Charles L. (Kathy) Watts, James A. Watts and Willis G. Watts, all of South Bend. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret (Bob) Hayden of Elkhart, IN, and Rene (Bernie) Gropp of Osceola, IN; and two brothers, Robert R. (Wilametta) Watts and Franklin (Mack) Watts, both of Elkhart, IN. Mr. Watts was preceded in death by his loving wife; a daughter, Margaret Jane Watts Johnson on June 12, 1998; and by a grandson, Joseph L. Johnson on July 13, 2000. Mr. Watts retired from Osteopathic Hospital as a maintenance supervisor. He served during World War II in the U.S. Navy on a PT-109, the same vessel President John F. Kennedy served on. Mr. Watts was personally invited to President Kennedy's funeral, which he did attend. He was a former member of the VFW Post 1167 and VFW Post 9820, where he served as post commander years ago. Visitation hours will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, March 24, in Hanley & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home, located at West Ireland Road and Indiana 23, South Bend. The family request that all memorial contributions be made to Harbor Light Hospice, LaPorte, IN, or to Miller's Merry Manor Nursing Center, New Carlisle, IN. The HANLEY & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home handled arrangements and services and extend deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayer to the Watts family.
