Joellen Rae Metzler
May 5, 1929 - April 14, 2022
Joellen Rae Schurr, 92, died on April 14, 2022 at the Fountains of West County in Ellisville, MO. She considered South Bend, IN her home. Joellen was born on May 5, 1929 in Wakarusa, IN to the late Elmer and Bernita (Morris) Metzler. On August 18, 1949, she married Richard Lemar Schurr in Wakarusa. He preceded her in death, as did one son James, of Chicago. Joellen is survived by three of her children: Mark (Jessica), of South Bend, IN; Steven, of Chicago, IL; and Lisa (David) Rosenstock, of Chesterfield, MO; and four grandchildren: Jacob, Greta and Maggie Rosenstock, and Eric Schurr. Joellen was salutatorian of her graduating class at Wakarusa High School and obtained an associate degree from Goshen College. Math was her favorite subject and sometimes she wished she had been an accountant. Her favorite jobs were as a secretary for Dr. Mininger of Elkhart, IN before she was married, and for the English Department at St. Mary’s College before she retired. She maintained a comforting and attractive household for her family and enjoyed baking cookies and exceptional pies. She took great pleasure in her grandchildren. Joellen was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Crest Manor Church of the Brethren, and was a Stephen Minister. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 PM on June 2, 2022 at the Crest Manor Church of the Brethren, 1342 Berkshire Dr., South Bend, IN. Burial will be private. Donations in her memory can be made to the Crest Manor Church of the Brethren or the Alzheimer’s Association.
