SOUTH BEND - Virginia M. Mackowiak, 92, peacefully passed away on Friday, May 12, 2017. Virginia was born May 25, 1924 in South Bend, to the late Frank and Bertha (Gruszynski) Bilinski. On August 23, 1947 Virginia married her loving husband of 63 years, Joseph C. Mackowiak; he preceded her in death on February 5, 2010. She was also preceded in death by brothers, Chester, William, Robert and Raymond Bilinski; and sisters, Adelle Waruszewski, Marge Lies and Mary Ann Pye.Survivors of Virginia include her children, Sandra (James) Rodewald, Diane Hanson, Patrick Mackowiak and Thomas Mackowiak; grandchildren, Kristen (David) Butler, Craig (Mandy) Rodewald, Todd (Stacey) Rodewald, Jason Rodewald, Andrew (Melanie) Rodewald, Sara Rodewald, Megan Mackowiak, Matthew (Andy) Markle-Mackowiak and Melissa (Cody) Smith; great-grandchildren, Aidan and Brennan Butler, Bella, Cameron, Mia, Cadence and James Rodewald; brother, Edward Bilinski; and sisters-in-law, Mary Jane Mackowiak and Georgian (Gene) Szweda. Virginia retired from the LaSalle High School in South Bend in 1987. She was a parishioner at Holy Family Catholic Church where she was a member of the Ladies Altar and Rosary Sodality. Virginia was also a member of the Polish Women's Alliance Group #65, the PNA, and MR Falconette Nest 200. Virginia sang for her senior prom at Woodrow Wilson High School in 1943. She was a model for the 1947 Studebaker Eagle Automobile. Virginia enjoyed sports, bingo, bowling, cooking, baking, trips to the casinos and gin rummy with friends; all knew her as Auntie Jean, Virg, Ginia and Virginia. She was a very fun person, always joking and smiling. She loved spending time with family and friends and they all meant the world to her. Most of all she was a devoted wife and wonderful mother and grandmother. The family would like to thank Virginia's caregivers at “Wedgewood Pines”, “Your Home Assisted Living” and Center for Hospice for their exceptional care provided for the past several months. Visitation for Virginia will be 3:00pm to 7:00pm Monday, May 15, 2017 in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Rd. with a Rosary to be prayed at 4:00pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Holy Family Catholic Church at 11:30am Tuesday, May 16, 2017. Entombment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.
