SOUTH BEND - Clement S. Mackowiak, 93, passed away Thursday, July 28, 2016 in the Sanctuary at St. Paul's. Clem was born November 5, 1922 in South Bend to the late Joseph and Jennie Mackowiak. Clem was also preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Mackowiak, Henrietta Gerbasich; and brothers, Aloysius and Joseph Mackowiak, Jr. On November 8, 1947, Clem married his loving wife of 69 years, Mary Jane (Borlik) Mackowiak, she survives along with sons, Michael (Judy) Mackowiak of Fort Wayne, David (Veronica) Mackowiak of South Bend, and Dennis (Donna) Mackowiak of Harleysville, PA; grandchildren, Mark, Ryan, Lori, Jason; great-grandchildren, Hope, Shane, Reese, Creed and Luke; and sister, Georgianne (Gene) Swzeda of Granger. Clem honorably served his country in the United States Army, earning a Distinguished Service Medal, Bronze Star, and 2 Purple Hearts. He was an auditor with Clemens Trucking and Tucker Freight for over 30 years and worked at Lacey Fabricating. Clem was past president of the Holy Name Society at the Cathedral of St. Matthew. He was a member of the American Legion Post #357, VFW, DAV and the Chippewa Travel Club. Clem enjoyed his trip to Rome, traveling with parishioners from the Cathedral of St. Matthew. He also traveled both outside the U.S. and a number of States and Cities across the country. Clem was an avid Notre Dame fan. He enjoyed gardening, and bowling mixed doubles with his wife at Chippewa Bowl. Visitation for Clem will be 10:00 am to 11:00 am, Saturday, July 30, 2016 in the Sanctuary at St. Paul's Memorial Chapel, where a memorial service will be held at 11:00 am. ST. MACKOWIAK, CLEMENT S.
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Clement S. Mackowiak, Private, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as a Medical Aidman with the 135th Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 8 January 1944. Private Mackowiak's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 34th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
