SOUTH BEND - Alexander R. Horvath, 99 years old, passed away at 8:30 AM Saturday, December 11, 2015, at West Woods Nursing Home, Niles, MI. Alexander was a truck driver all of his life as well as a heavy equipment operator. After his retirement years, Alexander delivered vehicles for Tyler's and Jordan Ford. He was born on October 17, 1916, in South Bend, IN, to the late Anthony G. and Mary (Shanto) Horvath. On December 16, 1946, in Plymouth, IN, he married Bertha May (Rose) Horvath, who preceded him in death on July 16, 2012.
Mr. Horvath was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, South Bend, where he served as head usher for 68 years. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean War. Alexander was Past Vice-Commander & Lifetime Member of American Legion #50; member of VFW #360 Mishawaka; and a member of Clay Democratic Club. Alexander is survived by his two daughters, Judy Bedell-Deutscher and her husband, Ward Deutscher of Niles, MI, and Mary (Dave) Stogsdill of South Bend; two sons, Tony (Pam) Horvath and Mike Horvath, both of South Bend; ten grandchildren, Gage Horvath, Rick Bedell, Brandi Waters, Baylie Waters, Adam Horvath, Shawn Horvath, Jessica Waters, Leah Mullins, Stacie Stogsdill and Ginger Stogsdill, fourteen great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth Sheets; and four brothers, Michael, Anthony, John and Steve. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 AM Wednesday, December 16, 2015, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 52473 State Road 933, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family from 9:30 AM Wednesday until time of Mass. Burial will follow at Ullery Cemetery, South Bend.
