SOUTH BEND - Donald A. Lightner Jr., 83, of South Bend, IN, passed away Thursday, September 29th, in his residence at 1:30 PM. He was surrounded by his loving family at his time of passing. Mr. Lightner was born on December 31, 1927, in Mishawaka, and had resided in the Michiana area for his lifetime. On August 5, 1950, in South Bend, IN, he married the former Mary E. Horvath, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, JoAnn L. (John) Small of South Bend; a son, Bruce M. (Janet) Lightner of St. Charles, MO; one sister, Joyce E. Goffeney of South Bend; and two brothers, Terry L. Lightner of Lakeville, IN, and Michael S. Lightner of Scottsdale, AZ. Also surviving are four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, whom he loved and cherished. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald A. Lightner Sr. and Eva M. (Gilliland) Lightner. Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure... You are loved beyond words, missed beyond measure. Mr. Lightner retired from Town Air Freight as a driver in 1993. He was a US Army veteran who served during World War II, and was very proud to have served his country. Donald enjoyed computers, bowling, golf and photography; he also enjoyed flying and having his own pilot license. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and the Michigan Amateur Radio Association, and was also the former owner of Airport Limo Service. He will be dearly missed by his loving family and many friends he made during his life journey. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who always placed his family first. The family requests that all memorial contributions be made to the charity of donor's choice. A memorial Mass will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, October 15, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, with Fr. Chuck Herman officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 9:15 AM until 10 AM at the church. Cremation has taken place and burial will take place at a later date at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame, IN.
