William A. Burkus, Sr.

South Bend - William A. Burkus, Sr., 92, passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2014 in the Hospice House. William was born August 7, 1921 in Plymouth. William married Lillian ( Steinhoffer ) Burkus, she preceded him in death. William is also preceded in death three brothers and two sisters. Survivors of William include his sons, William Burkus of South Bend, and Thomas Burkus of Seattle, WA; grandchildren Timothy (LaShan Rininger) Burkus of Mishawaka, Jennifer Brough of Mishawaka; and his great grandchildren. William honorably served his country in the United States Army during World War II at the Battle of the Bulge. He was a parishioner of Holy Family Catholic Church; and was employed with the IBEW local #153. William enjoyed gardening, fishing, and going to the Blue Chip Casino. He loved cooking, playing puzzles, and going fishing with his grandchildren up at Corey Lake. William was a wonderful grandfather who babysat his grandchildren from infancy through grade school. He would often take his grandchildren to the Airport, buy them candy and watch the airplanes. He will be greatly missed by his family and grandchildren and great grandchildren. Visitation for William will be 2:00pm to 4:00pm, Sunday, March 16, 2014 in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Rd. A Funeral Ceremony will be celebrated at 10:00 am Monday, March 17, 2014 in the Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery.
