SOUTH BEND - Eugene F. "Bija" Banicki, 84, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away Saturday, September 10, 2011. Bija was born January 23, 1927, in South Bend, Indiana, to Frank and Bernice (Maciejewski) Banicki. He retired from ARA Vending after 26 years of service. On June 23, 1951, Eugene married Therese M. Grabarz who survives. Also surviving are his children, Denise (John) Edwards of Mishawaka, Indiana, Gina (Michael) Beyer of Toano, Virginia, Dennis Banicki of South Bend, Indiana, Gino Banicki of Salt Lake City, Utah; grandchildren, Johnathan (Stacy) Byer, Abby Byer, Alex Banicki, Donna (Bryan) Woodward; great grandchildren, Caysie Wilcox, Bryan Woodward, Caroline Byer, Britton Woodward; sisters, Evelyn Carlson of South Bend, Indiana, Janine (Quinto) Squadroni of Mishawaka, Indiana; and a brother, Frank Banicki of South Bend, Indiana. A sister, Tessie Swartz, and a brother, Irvin Banicki, both preceded him in death. Bija was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, a WWII Army veteran, member of the American Legion, Post 50, and the V.F.W. Post 9820, formerly 3194. He enjoyed the Friday night card club and going out to eat with friends, Rita, Marilyn and Jerry who have gotten together for over 30 years. He enjoyed going to the Casinos and was a Cubs and Packers fan, and also loved NASCAR. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, September 14, 2011, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana, where a parish Rosary will be prayed at 4 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 15, 2011, in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.
