SOUTH BEND - Gertrude M. Ornat, 91, of South Bend, IN, passed away on Tuesday, March 31, 2009. She was born on September 5, 1917, in South Bend, to the late Joseph and Lottie (Tobolski) Szumski, and was a lifelong area resident. On January 20, 1940, she married Sylvester Ornat, who preceded her in death on January 13, 2002. She was also preceded in death by four sisters, Irene Markowski, Dorothy Barczykowski, Bridget Wujcik and Harriet Froberger; and by two brothers, Aloysius and Eugene Szumski. Gertrude is survived by her son, LeRoy (Bonnie) Ornat of Mishawaka, IN; her grandson, Glenn (Kim) Ornat of Wakarusa, IN; her great-grandson, Brady; two sisters-in-law, Alice Szumski and Jean Ornat; and by many nieces and nephews, who knew her better as "Auntie Cookie." Mrs. Ornat was a parishioner of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, South Bend. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 PM Friday, April 3, 2009, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, where a Rosary will be prayed at 4 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Saturday, April 4, 2009, in Corpus Christi Catholic Church, with entombment to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, South Bend.
