Alexander Verba, 87, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003, at his residence in Richland Township in Whitley County. He was born May 26, 1916, in Whitsett, Pa. His parents were Alexander and Elizabeth (King) Verba. He married Rachel Mary (Miller) Verba on Feb. 3, 1951, at Hungarian Reform Church in Cleveland. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, Alex Verba Jr. of Osceola and Charles Verba of Angola; two daughters, Elizabeth White of Franklin and Susan Meads of Fort Wayne; a sister, Lida Myer of Cleveland; a brother, John Verba of Cleveland; 12 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by two brothers and a grandson. He attended Fayette County Schools in Perryopolis, Pa. He was employed by Whitley County REMC for 25 years, retiring in 1978. He was a member of Troy Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Chris Thurow will conduct a service at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Troy Presbyterian Church, 6465 W. Lincoln Way in Columbia City. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Smith and Sons Funeral Home, 207 N. Main St. in Columbia City, and from 9:30 a.m. until time of service Wednesday at the church. Burial will be at Troy Presbyterian Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Troy Presbyterian Church Youth Ministries.
