On November 9, 1940, she was born in Aka, Hungary, to the late Joseph and Anna (Furtenbacher) Lafko, who immigrated through Ellis Island just after WWII. She graduated from Rutgers University with a degree in English and Education in 1962, and taught first grade at Paradise Knoll School in New Jersey. On May 25, 1963, Caroline married Louis B.
