Obituary: South Bend - Sylvester T. "Sal" Hanyzewski, 93, formerly of Garden Lane, South Bend, Ind, died at 3:28 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21 in Memorial Hospital. He was born Oct. 10, 1907, in South Bend and was a lifelong area resident. Mr. Hanyzewski retired in 1971 from the Bendix Corporation.
On March 29, 1930, in Gary, Ind., he married Lucille Sojka, who presceded him in death on Sept. 22, 1992. he was also preceded in death by his parents, Casmir and Magdalina (Drews) Hanyzewski; and by a brother, Dennis Hanyzewski.
He is survived by two sons, Duane (Laverne) Hanyzewski and Dennis (Beverly) Hanyzewski, both of South Bend; three grandchildren, Gayle (Jim) Landsman of Grand Haven , Mich., Douglas Hayzewski of South Bend and Jill (Dan) Hanusin of Dyer, Ind.; four great-grandchildren, Haley, Jordyn and Clay Landsman, and Brandon Hanusin; and by a sister, Clare Ridenour of South Bend.
Mr. Hanyzewski was an Army veteran of world War II. He was a member of Amercian Legion Pulaski Post #357, the Holy Name Society, and the married Men's Club of St. Casmir Catholice Church. He was one of the first ushers at the Notre Dame games, and was a member of U.A.W. Local #9 Retirees.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday in St. Casmir Catholice Church.
Family and friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today in St. Joseph Funeral Home, 824 S. Mayflower Raod, where a rosary will be at 7 p.m.
