MISHAWAKA - John E. Cenkush, 89, residing in Mishawaka, Indiana, passed away Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at Cardinal Nursing Home, South Bend.John was born on December 22, 1928 in South Bend to the late Otto Cenkush and Mary (Kopinski) Cenkush and has remained a lifelong resident of this area. John proudly served our country in the United States Army during World War II. Following his service to our country, he was a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service for 37 years, retiring in 1983. John was an avid golfer and a past member of the South Bend Moose Club. On May 28, 1955 in South Bend, he was united in marriage to Shirley K. (Owens) Cenkush, who survives. John and Shirley were married for 62 years. Also surviving are two daughters, Sheryl (Jeff) Baker and Laurie (Donnie) Gustafson, both of South Bend; three grandchildren, Amber (Mario Williams) Gustafson, Adam Gustafson, and Justice Gustafson; four great-grandchildren, Mario Williams, Jr., Makayla Williams, Mason Williams, and Maranda Williams; sister, Dorothy Rynearson of Mishawaka; and sister-in-law, Joan Cenkush. John was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Jean Bauert, Betty Niedbala, Ann Dukai, and Marge Cenkush; and brother, Jim Cenkush. At John's request, there will be no funeral services. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at Cardinal Nursing Home and the staff at Heartland Hospice for their loving and compassionate care.
