Barbara Valerie Szewczyk, 80, residing in Notre Dame, passed away peacefully at 5:07pm on February 7, 2017 at Hospice House in South Bend, surrounded by husband and family. She was born on April 6, 1936 in Chicago, IL, to the late Leon and Wanda Gale. In June 1956, Barbara married Albin Szewczyk, who survives. She is also survived by daughters, Karen Knop of Indianapolis, and Andrea Simpson of South Bend, and Tere (Paul) Sinka of South Bend; twelve grandchildren, Alex Knop, Shelby Knop, Scott Simpson, Nick Simpson, Kaity (David) Berta, Paul Sinka, Brittany (John) Szuba, Bryant Sinka, Dalton (Jeanette) Kruger, Hayden Kruger, Max Kruger and Hannah Moore; eight great-grandchildren, Greyson Szuba, Sterling Simpson, Callum Simpson, Aiden Berta, Wyatt Berta, Chloe Berta, Willow Berta, and Brody Kruger; and brother, Leo Gale of Burlington, WI. In addition to her parents, Barbara is preceded in death by two daughters, Lisa Kruger and Nancy Szewczyk. Barbara graduated from Notre Dame High School for girls in 1949 and matriculated at Wright Junior College in Chicago, majoring in literature. She was an avid reader and loved her crossword puzzles. She volunteered her services to Christ Child Society Clothing Center in South Bend as well as Memorial Hospital. She was a life member of the Ladies of Notre Dame and St. Mary’s. She enjoyed her friends as a member of South Bend Country Club’s 9-hole ladies golf group. Life took her to all parts of the world through her travels with her husband. Her favorite time of the year was fall, when she was hosting and entertaining families and friends for Notre Dame tailgating parties. While spending time at all of these activities through the years, she found plenty of time to love and spoil her husband, children and wonderful grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30am on Friday, February 17, 2017 at Basilica of the Sacred Heart, 1 Holy Cross Drive, Notre Dame, IN 46556. Inurnment at Cedar Grove Cemetery will take place at a later date. Friends may visit with the family from 4:00-8:00pm on Thursday, February 16, where a Rosary will be recited at 4:30pm, at Palmer Funeral Homes-Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, IN 46635. Expressions of sympathy on behalf of Barbara may be offered to Christ Child Society, 308 S. Scott Street, P.O. Box 1286, South Bend, IN 46624.
