Martha F. Benko
September 6, 1910 - February 15, 2011

Former South Bend resident Martha Frances Benko, 100, died at 5:15 a.m. Tuesday in Hubbard Hill Estates, Elkhart, IN. Mrs. Benko was born September 6, 1910 in South Bend to the late Augusta (Van Landuyt) and Reniel Verhostra and was a lifetime area resident. On May 27, 1933 in South Bend she married Emery J. Benko who preceded her in death June 26, 1983. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Verhostra and Gaston "Van" Verhostra. She is survived by her daughter, Laura L. Cleary (Michael) of Carpinteria, CA; her son, Roger W. Benko (Dianne) of Elkhart; six grandchildren, Lindsay Mintenko (Michael), Lesley Melvin (Blair), Linda Pitts (Kevin), Sean Cleary (Leah), James Cleary (Beth) and Megan Cleary; and nine great-grandchildren, Heather and Kate Cleary, Allison and Dana Pitts, Jordan Cleary, Madison and Jake Mintenko, and Izabel and Nico Melvin. Martha grew up on a farm on Hickory Road in Granger. She and her husband were locally recognized for their vegetable stand which supplied sweet corn, produce and flowers to the surrounding area. Martha's passion was her roses and she spent many hours caring for them. Martha was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She recently celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends. She was a resident of Hubbard Hill for the past three years and the family expresses their appreciation for the wonderful care she received. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 19th in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Rd. with Rev. Ted Lester of Memorial Presbyterian Church, South Bend, officiating. Private family burial will follow in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, IN. The family will receive friends from 4 until 7 p.m. Friday, February 18th in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1836 Portage Ave, South Bend, IN, 46616 or Hubbard Hill Estates Extended Care Unit, 28070 CR 24 W, Elkhart, IN, 46517.
