Dec. 10, 1921 - Feb. 7, 2013
NILES - Sigmund P. Cichos, 91, residing in Niles, passed away at 12:50 pm Thursday, February 7, 2013 in Hospice House of South Bend. He was born in South Bend on December 10, 1921 to the late Thomas Joseph and Martha Rose (Joswiak) Cichos, and remained a lifelong area resident. On January 23, 1954 in southern Indiana, Sig married the former Marilyn J. Kwist, who survives. In addition to his loving wife of 59 years, Marilyn, Sig is survived by five children, Cheri (Cichos) Eberhart, Cindy (Cichos) (Cameron) Leonard, Jim Cichos, Lauri (Cichos) (Richard) Olson, and Jeff (Stacie Bates) Cichos; and three grandchildren, Charlotte and Priscilla Olson, and Michael (Cichos) Sommers. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Victoria Rose Cameron; and siblings, Rose Schultz, Mary Patterson, and Ted and Julian Cichos. Sig was a happily married and faithful husband, calling his wife "Honeybunch". He loved his wife and children with all his heart and was always there for them. He was the most loving and caring father, who would do anything for them and he will be greatly missed. Sig was known as "Siggy" and was very talented. He owned and operated Cichos Concrete Products, making and producing concrete blocks. He then developed his skills as a master designer and began a 2nd business, called Blockmatic, which was in business for 37 years. That business developed into many inventions and engineering accomplishments that revolutionized the concrete products industry, many developments of which are still used today. Siggy was considered a genius in the block machine industry. His love and passion was to work consistently, building the best block-making equipment in the business. He only recently retired due to health concerns. Sig was a 50+ year member of Apostolic Temple. The family wants to thank the staff at West Woods of Niles. Funeral services for Sig will be held at 1:00 pm Monday, February 11, 2013 in the Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend. Rev. Christopher Rowe of Apostolic Temple will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Friends may visit with the family from 2:00 - 6:00 pm Sunday, February 10, 2013 in the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy in loving memory of Sig may be donated to The Sigmund P. Cichos Memorial Fund, c/o Apostolic Temple, 2221 S. Ironwood Drive, South Bend, IN 46613. Online condolences may be left for the Cichos family at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.
