SOUTH BEND - John R. Hahaj Sr., 88, of South Bend, passed away on Saturday, April 25, 2009, in his home. He was born on October 24, 1920, in South Bend, and was a lifelong area resident. On April 19, 1941, he married Ruth C. Iseman, who preceded him in death on December 25, 2005. He was also preceded in death by a son, Charles Hahaj; two sisters, Mary Patterson and Bernadette Walker; and five brothers, Louis, Raymond, Eugene, Leonard and Ben Hahaj. John is survived by his daughter, Diana Hahaj-McKeown of South Bend; his sons, John Hahaj Jr. of Granger and Alan Hahaj Sr.; 10 grandchildren, Cece (Brian) Englehardt, Crystal (Sean) Gleason, Brandon Hahaj, Alan Hahaj Jr., Nicole Hahaj, Nicholas (Christine) Hahaj, Paul (Dawn) Leslie, Theresa (Michael) Turbyfill, Laura Szynski and Carrie Burch; 11 great-grandchildren, Gabrielle, Joey and Josh Englehardt, Matthew, Clarrisa and Cody Gleason, Candice and Joshua Barnett, Angel R. Leslie, Allison Lannoo and Tyler Szynski; a great-great- granddaughter, Brianna; a sister, Angela Eudaley of Spokane, WA; and a brother, Francis Hahaj of South Bend. Mr. Hahaj worked as a tool-and-die man for Martin Machine for 50 years before retiring in 1983. He was a United States Marine Corps veteran of WWII and a member of American Legion, Pulaski Post #357, and St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, South Bend. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM today, April 28, in Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, where a parish Rosary will prayed at 3:30 PM. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 AM Wednesday in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, with burial to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the woundedwarriors.org.
