MISHAWAKA - Katie Clara Mass, 87, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 5, 2013, at Ironwood Health and Rehab in South Bend, IN. Katie was born on June 23, 1926, in Stroehlow Germany, as the daughter of Gottlieb and Amanda (Lowe) Kwek. She was preceded in death by her parents; seven brothers, Leon, Erich, Herbert, Walter, Reinhold, Reinhart and Ernest. On December 1, 1945, in Detroit, MI, as the former Katie Kwek, she married Alfred Otto Mass Jr., who preceded her in death on October 8, 1997. Surviving Katie are three children, Karen Pratt of Elkhart, Donald (Bonnie) Mass of Osceola and Bonnie (Bill) Fladeland of South Bend; and a son-in-law, Rick Bogaert of Mishawaka. Also surviving are her 10 grandchildren, Christopher Brennan, Lisa Asbury, Lori Huddleston, Julie Wagner, Katie Smith, Andrea Wilson, Brian Patrick, Amanda Hardy, Matthew Van Zant and Rachel Fladeland; 14 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Donald Kwek of Stuart, FL.
Her daughter, Janet Bogaert, and son-in-law, Lawrence Pratt, preceded her in death. Katie was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, South Bend. She was a kind, generous and loving mother, grandmother and friend who loved spending time with her family. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 8, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, South Bend, with Pastor Steve Latzke officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery, South Bend. Memorial contributions may be made in Katie's name to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 805 S. 29th Street, South Bend, IN 46615; or to American Cancer Society , Great Lakes Division, Northwest Indiana Office, 130 Red Coach Dr., Mishawaka, IN 46545.
