SOUTH BEND - Concetta I. "Connie" Martino, 97, of South Bend, was received peacefully into the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday morning, May 9th, which was her birthday. Born in 1916 in Rende, Italy to the late Mary and Joseph Zupo, Connie came to the United States in 1961, moving to South Bend in 1973. She is survived by two sons, Carmine Martino (Maria) of South Bend and Emilio Martino (Sherry) of Niles, MI; seven grandchildren, Connie Lubelski (Rick), Silvio Martino, Angel Horrall (Peter), Josiah Martino (Danielle), Rachel Martino, Joanna Beasley (Kerry) and Susanna Anderstrom (Jonathan); eight great-grandchildren; and a brother, Eugenio Zupo of Rende. Connie came to America to work as a seamstress. She worked very hard to save enough money and provide a furnished apartment. She was then able to send for her two sons to come out of an orphanage in Italy and join her in the U.S. in 1963. She loved God, her family and enjoyed cooking pasta and meatballs for her grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. today, May 11th in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Rd., with Pastor Jim Garnett officiating. Committal services and entombment will follow in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. The family will receive friends in the funeral home today from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service.
