SOUTH BEND - Louis J. Berta, 97, passed away on Monday, July 27, 2009, at 8:40 a.m. in Sanctuary at St. Joseph. Louis was born on April 27, 1912, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Anton and Mary (Sparto) Berta. On September 24, 1942, he married Evelyn (Marcinkowski) in South Bend, who preceded him in death on February 14, 2005. He was also preceded in death by his parents and by his five sisters. He is survived by two sons, Dale (Olga) Berta and Robert (Carol) Berta, both of South Bend; and by his grandson, Mark (Chanda) Berta of South Bend. Louis was a member of Army Air Corps and was discharged in 1944. He was a parishioner of St. Casimir Catholic Church, a member of St. Casimir Married Men's Club, Harvest House and the Holy Name Society. He retired from IUSB. Visitation will be on Wednesday, July 29, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road, South Bend. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, July 30, 2009, at 10 a.m. in St. Casimir Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, South Bend. Visitation will also be from 9 to 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home prior to the Mass. Memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
