[N29331] John Louis Hintz
November 11, 1930 ~ August 10, 2021 (age 90)

John Louis Hintz, 90, of Granger, Indiana, known to some as John, Mig, Dad, Pawpaw, died at home on August 11, 2021. He was born in Adrian, MI on November 11, 1930 to Louis E. and Albena (Brosmer) Hintz. He is survived by his ever-patient and loving wife of 63 years, Mary S. Hintz, son John P. Hintz and daughter-in-law Kristen B. Hintz of East Lansing, Michigan, grandsons Patrick Hintz and Robert Hintz of East Lansing, Michigan, and sisters Barbara Hazen (and husband Jim Hazen) of Adrian, Michigan and Mary Ann Masteller (and husband Jerry) of Lyndhurst, Ohio. He was born and raised in Adrian, Michigan and was educated at St. Mary’s High School. After dazzling Lenawee County with his athletic exploits, he matriculated to Adrian College and later to Indiana State University, after fighting the Korean War in Rockville, Indiana. Once the world was safe in southwest Indiana, he met and married Mary Shumaker, whom he met at Indiana State, and the newly-weds moved to Connersville, Ohio where Mary taught young Buckeyes good grammar and John sold gasoline for Marathon and later Phillips Petroleum. Upon relocating to South Bend, Indiana, John became involved in the local community and learned where all of the golf courses and grocery stores were, and Christ the King masses. He loved Notre Dame football games but was even more devoted to his family. He loved and argued with Mary all of his life and had the enduring admiration of his son. When the oil companies realized that they could survive without him, he retired and began many years of volunteering with Meals on Wheels and Legal Aid of Northern Indiana and coffee drinking at Martins. He became a professional snow-shoveler in Farmington Square over the years and gained many friends and appreciative neighbors along the way. He was a kind man. After being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in March 2021, he continued to live his life and serve until the very end. A few days before he died, he held the hand of his upset son and told him that “everything is going to be okay”. John felt that he was a very lucky man and was incredibly content with his life. A special appreciation and gratitude goes out to Heart to Heart Hospice and Deb Findlay. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, August 14, 2021 in Christ the King Catholic Church. A Committal Service with Military Honors will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Saturday in Christ the King Catholic Church. Memorial Contributions may be directed to The Christ Child Society, South Bend Schools Early Education, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
