MISHAWAKA - Giulia "Julia" P. Violi, 84, of Mishawaka, passed away Tuesday afternoon, October 12, 2010 in her home. She fought a courageous one year battle with Esophageal Cancer. Julia was born March 1, 1926 in Plati, Italy, a daughter of the late Dominico and Loreta (Marando) Romeo. She came to the United States in 1947, first living in Detroit. On July 5, 1948, Julia married Sam Violi and the couple settled in Mishawaka. Julia was a talented self-employed seamstress, working from her home. She was a member of St. Monica Catholic Church. Julia enjoyed flower gardening, shopping and cooking. Julia loved traveling throughout the United States and abroad. Her family was truly the center of her life. Julia loved the holidays and cooking for her entire family. She saw the good in everyone and never had a bad word to say about anyone. Julia is lovingly remembered as a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Julia's surviving family includes her husband of 62 years, Sam; four children, Marianna (Stephen) Govorko of Mishawaka, Anthony (Mary Kay) Violi of North Richland Hill, Texas, Rita Robertson of Goshen and Dominic (Jennifer) Violi of Mishawaka; a brother, Joseph Romeo of Mishawaka; seven grandchildren, Julie (Matthew) Collins, Chrissy Govorko, Anthony (Kristin) Violi, Michael Violi, Lisa (Kenny) Cook, Rachel (Jason) Oppenheim and Dominic Violi; four great grandchildren, Nicholas and Michael Collins, and Luke and Cade Violi; nieces and nephews, Mary Anna Violi, Frank Violi, Anthony Violi, Lori Gaby, Fred Romeo, Toni Ann Thornton and Julie Strohl; and several nieces and nephews in Italy. Julia was preceded in death by a grandson, Samuel Violi; and a nephew, Dominic Romeo.
Mass of Christian will be celebrated Saturday at 2 pm in St. Monica Catholic Church, 222 W. Mishawaka Ave., Mishawaka, with Rev. Jeffery Largent officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery. Friends may spend time with Julia's family Friday from 4 - 7:30 pm in Thallemer, Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. 3rd Street, Mishawaka, where the Rosary will be prayed at 7:30 pm. Visitation will also be Saturday from 1 - 2 pm in the church.Contributions in Julia's memory may be directed to the Center for Hospice Care or St. Monica Church.
