KNOX - William S. Wakal, 85, passed away Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at his home. Mr. Wakal was born October 21, 1930, in Knox, Ind., to Harry and Mary (Beck) Wakal, and lived in the area all of his life. He was a former employee of Starke Memorial Hospital in Knox. He was a member of the Knox United Methodist Church, the Knox Masonic Lodge #639 F & AM, and the South Bend Scottish Rite. Mr. Wakal was a former mayor of Knox, former president of the Indiana Hospital Engineers Association, was a former volunteer of many community organizations, and was elected to several public offices including the Knox City Council. On July 29, 1950, in Hamlet, Ind., he was married to the former Joan Schrishuhn, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Diane; one grandson, Aaron; three brothers and one sister. Survivors include one daughter, Kathy (David) Young of Hendersonville, N.C; two sons, William L. (Shirlee) Wakal of Knox and Ben Wakal of Knox; five grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Marion Wakal of Jeannette, Pa., and Russell Wakal of Niagara Falls, Canada. Funeral services will be Tuesday, September 20, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. (Central Time) at the Knox United Methodist Church, with Pastor Dean Fager and Pastor Phil Emerson officiating. Burial will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery, Knox. Friends may visit Monday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Rannells Funeral Home, Hamlet Chapel, and Tuesday at the church one hour prior to the services.
