Walter was born as Wladyslaw Cukrowicz on 04 May 1880. He later Americanized his name. He was probably born in Witaszyce, Prussian Poland, (Poland was a part of Prussia) which, at that time, was a part of Germany. His parents were Wojciech (aka Adalbert) Cukrowicz and Antonina Rauchut. Obituary:
From The South Bend Tribune, Thursday, May 8, 1941 -- Walter Cukrowicz -- Walter Cukrowicz, aged 61, of 515 South 35th street, died at 12:35 a.m. today in St. Joseph hospital after an illness of two weeks. He was born in Poland, May 8, 1880, and had lived here for 60 years, coming from Poland as a child. He was single and a laborer at the Oliver Farm Equipment company plant. Surviving are six brothers, Martin Cukrowicz, of Milwaukee Wis; Leonard, John, Stephen, Harry and Nicholas Cukrowicz, all of South Bend; two sisters, Mr. Clara Smolka and Mrs. Anna Gorney, both of South Bend. Friends will be received tonight in the home of his niece, Mrs. Wanda Jurek, 515 South 35th street, with whom he had made his home. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Monica's Roman Catholic church, Mishawaka, with Rev. Anthony Badina, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Polish cemetery. Mr. Cukrowicz was a member of St. Casimir's Brotherly Aid society, of St. Casimir's church here, and the Holy Name society, of St. Monica's church.
