NEW CARLISLE - Jack Gilpin, 86, of New Carlisle, IN, passed away at 9:40 PM Thursday, September 20, 2007, in Miller's Merry Manor in New Carlisle. He was born on April 6, 1921, to the late Lawrence and Edna (Fowler) Gilpin in Fort Smith, Arkansas, and had lived in New Carlisle since he was 16 years old, coming from Mishawaka, IN. Along with his parents, four brothers, George, Bill, Art and Harry Gilpin, also preceded him in death. Jack was a graduate of New Carlisle High School. Mr. Gilpin retired in 1983 as a construction engineer for Wheelabrator-Frye after 17 years. He had also worked at Neighbor Care in South Bend where he was a delivery driver until 2001. On May 7, 1949, he married Dorothy L. Myers in the New Carlisle Community Church in New Carlisle, IN. She died on June 15, 1999. He is survived by five sons, Robert (Loretta) Stricklett of New Carlisle, IN, Michael (Janet) Gilpin of Michigan City, IN, Jay (Charlene) Gilpin of New Carlisle, IN, Daniel Gilpin of New Carlisle, IN, and Gregory Gilpin of LaPorte, IN; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Letha Gilpin (who was married to Art) of New Carlisle, IN. Mr. Gilpin was a Marine veteran of World War II, where he received a Purple Heart. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 297 in New Carlisle, IN, and a lifetime member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars in LaPorte, IN. He was very proud of his sons, and loved spending time with his family and Scooby. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 PM (E.S.T.) Monday, Sept. 24, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 201 S. Filbert Street, New Carlisle, IN. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM (E.S.T.) Tuesday, Sept. 25, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, New Carlisle, IN, with Rev. Joann Kaiser officiating. Burial will follow at New Carlisle Cemetery, where military services will be conducted by American Legion Post No. 297. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
