SOUTH BEND - Dolores Szmanda, 78, passed away Monday, April 6, 2015 at Bertha D. Garten Ketcham Memorial Center in Oden, IN. Dolores was born August 27, 1936 in South Bend to the late Douglas and Johanna (Berner) Gittins. Dolores is also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jessica Hack. On November 26, 1959 Dolores married her loving husband of 55 years, Jack E. Szmanda; he survives along with their children, Michaeleen S. (Douglas) Miller of Exton, PA, Mark K. Szmanda of Louisville, KY, and Ronald L. (fianc‚ Jada) Szmanda of Odon, IN; grandchildren, Nathan, Johanna, Andrew, and Allison Miller, Sara Higgs, and Adam Szmanda; seven great-grandchildren; a half-brother, William Gittins of Santa Rosa, CA; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Dolores was a graduate of Riley High School. She worked for many years with Sears & Roebuck. She loved her family very much. Visitation for Dolores will be 10:00 am to 11:00 am, Monday, April 13, 2015 in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Rd., South Bend, Indiana where a Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am in the funeral home. Burial will follow at St Joseph Cemetery. The family will forever be thankful for the love of the staff at the Bertha D. Gartin Ketcham Memorial Center, where memorial contributions may be made in remembrance of Dolores.
