Services for Nester P. Stachowicz, 62, a retired South Bend police officer who unsuccessfully sought to become St. Joseph County sheriff will be Tuesday at St. Stanislaus Kosta Catholic Church, Terre Coupee.Entombment will be in Resurrection Gardens of St. Joseph Cemetery. He died Saturday in the St. Joseph's Medical Center emergency room. Mr. Stachowicz, who lived at 26272 Whippoorwill Drive, retired as a South Bend police captain in 1972 after 20 years of service. He was the Republican nominee for sheriff in 1974, losing to Democrat Dean Bolerjack. In 1978 he unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination again. He was employed in the Security Department of Indiana University at South Bend for 15 years and had served as the director of IUSB security. While a South Bend officer, he worked at many jobs, including eight years as a captain and as a detective sergeant in the juvenile bureau. He acknowledged at retirement that he had a reputation as a "tough cop," but said, "Sure I'm tough, but I'm also fair." He was born November 15, 1925 in South Bend and was a lifelong area resident. On October 18, 1947, he married Irene Wroblewski, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Sandra McAfee of Portage, Mi; Judith Ann Johnson of Midlothian, Ill; and Michele Henson of Philadelphia; a son, Paul of Matterson, Ill., and nine grandchildren. He was a member of FOP 36, Chain O Lakes Conservation Club and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 6. He was a veteran of WWII. Friends may call today at Kazniewski & Sons Funeral Home.
