Joseph was born June 3, 1925 in South Bend, to the late Joe and Ella (Baumgartner) Szalay. He was also preceded in death by his brother, John Szalay, and sister, Mary Niezgodski. On October 22, 1970, Joseph married Jane who survives. They were married 41 years. Also surviving is a son, Joseph (Nataliya) Szalay, Jr. of South Bend; a granddaughter, Isabel and a granddaughter on the way. Joe wore many hats. At the age of 16 he was an auxiliary police officer connected with the civil defense. At the age of 18 he joined the United States Navy. From 1943 to 1946, he served on a destroyer, the U.S.S. Champlain, serving in the Mediterranean, Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. His ship was credited with sinking two German submarines. He also was in the battle for Okinawa against suicide bombers, landed in Japan shortly after that and saw damage in Hiroshima. Upon discharge from the Navy he joined the South Bend Police Department in 1947 at the age of 21. After retiring in 1970 from the Police Department, he worked as a security guard at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center and Memorial Hospital and he also was a school bus driver. The Case for Helen Smith Forsythe Szalay:
I went to the archives today and found the divorce record for Joseph and Helen Szalay.
Helen's previous name was Helen Forsythe, and they were married on 15 Jul 1953 (WHERE?). In the papers, it is mentioned that Helen has an adult son by a previous marriage. It is therefore unclear whether Forsythe is her maiden name or the name of her previous husband.
Based on City Directories and other info, I think it's a strong possibility that Helen's maiden name was Smith, and that she married and divorced a man named Otto Forsyth(e). They had a son named Otto Jr., and a daughter Sally.
City Directory 1951-52
Otto & Helen Forsythe reside at 1342 1/2 Lincoln Way Helen employed at S B Lathe
City Directory 1953-54
Joseph L Szalay & Helen C Smith / Forsythe reside at 1342 1/2 Lincoln Way Helen employed at S B Lathe, Joseph a Policeman
City Directory 1967
Joseph L Szalay & Helen C Smith / Forsythe reside at Lilac Road Helen employed at S B Lathe, Joseph a Policeman
Helens Obit 10/13/1989 .... As Helen Smith she married Otto Forsythe (d-1959) on 8/13/1927 in South Bend therefor she may have been the Mother of Joseph Jr. who was born about 1963 . it would appear that she may have been married to Joseph L Szalay between the years of 1953 and 1967 and divorced Joseph before her death in 1989.
