SOUTH BEND - Stewart Michael Herczeg was born on June 2, 1961 in Muncie, Indiana. In 1965 along with his parents and two brothers he moved to South Bend. Stew (as he was affectionately known by) passed away on Monday, August 28, 2017 in his residence in Pensacola, Florida. His parents are Stephen R. and Sheila M. Herczeg both of whom survive. Stew had two brothers and one sister, Lt. Colonel Stephen J. Herczeg ret. (Jolene, deceased) of Columbus, Georgia, Scott Herczeg (Sandy) of Mishawaka and Sara Curran (Shawn) of Fishers, Indiana. Stew married Tamela Waltman of Quitman, Mississippi in a ceremony at Erskine Golf Course on September 7, 1991. Stew and Tamela have two sons, Austin Herczeg of Pensacola and Pvt. Michael Herczeg U.S. Army, Fort Benning , Georgia. Stew leaves behind his wife, Tamela and several cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. Stew attended Hamilton Elementary, Jackson Middle, and Riley High School. While in elementary, middle and high school he participated in football, wrestling, and track. He was captain of the wrestling team his senior year and qualified for the regionals. Stew attended Ball State for two years and transferred to Purdue where he earned his degree. He enlisted in the Army after graduation and served two years at Fort Lewis, Washington. While at Fort Lewis he was a member of the post football team. Stew was employed by UPS in Arlington, Texas as a delivery driver. His family moved to Pensacola, where he lived in retirement. Stew will be remembered for his wit, ability to carry on a conversation with anyone about anything and his dedication to physical fitness. He was very happy to go to the gym. Cremation has taken place. The arrangements were handled by Family-Funeral & Cremation in Pensacola. The Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 13, at 11 AM with visitation one hour prior to the service at St. Patrick Church, 309 S. Taylor Street, South Bend.
