SOUTH BEND - Joan L. Faudree-Vitou, residing in South Bend, passed away peacefully at 9:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22, 2017, surrounded by the love and care of her family. She was 77 years old. She was born August 24, 1940 in South Bend, the daughter of John D. and Georgia L. (Whitcomb) Faudree, and was a graduate of John Adams High School. In 1958 she was united in marriage to Kenneth Drew. In 1970, she was married to James E. Vitou, who preceded her in death. She is survived by her two sons and their wives, Tracy A. and Donna Faudree of South Bend, and James E. and Christa Vitou of Westfield, IN, along with her two grandchildren, Jack and Jules Vitou, both at home in Westfield. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, William Reed Schmitt on January 3, 1982. She began her career as a waitress-hostess at several well-known restaurants in South Bend. She later worked for the City of South Bend Parks Dept. at the Potawatami Park Greenhouse. In 1996, she and her companion, Tom Harvey moved to Idaho where they owned and operated a local tavern. She retired, and not one to sit still, worked as Head Cook for a sorority house at the University of Idaho-Moscow. Joan was a member of the American Legion Post 303 in River Park. A time of visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 27 at Palmer Funeral Homes - Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan Street, South Bend. A private graveside service will be held on Thursday at Southlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Joan's memory may be offered to the Food Bank at Southgate Church, 3717 S.
