Mildred Garbacz

SOUTH BEND - Mildred (Rodick) Garbacz, age 96, peacefully passed away at Palm Beach Gardens Hospice on December 16, 2013. "Milka" was born November 2, 1917 in Mayville, Wisconsin and shortly after birth, moved to South Bend, Indiana. She was the daughter of Serbian-Austrian immigrants Peter (Petar) and Elaine (Hlinka Drljaca) Rodick (Rodich). She became a Palm Beach Gardens, Florida resident in 1990. Mildred is survived by her bother Donald "Dutch" Rodick of South Bend, IN; sister Violet King of South Bend, IN; devoted husband Nicholas Garbacz III; and four children, Nicholas (wife Denise) Garbacz IV of Port Charlotte, FL, Sandy G. Scott of PBG, FL, Tim Christopher of WPB, FL, and Lori R. Garbacz of PBG, FL. She is also survived by grandchildren Gwen Smith of Bellbrook, OH, Brian Garbacz of Jacksonville, FL, Kyle Garbacz of Las Vegas, NV, MSG. Mindy Wolfburg of Cary, NC, and Morgan Scott Kratovil of High Point, NC; great grandchildren, Tyler Smith; Hannah and Austin Wolfburg, Adam and Dane Kratovil; and many nieces and nephews. Mildred was pre-deceased by her parents, and siblings Nicholas, Michael, Joseph, Edith, Angela, Cecelia, and Mary. During her earlier life, "Millie" was employed at Bendix Corp. and various retail businesses part time before becoming co-owner of Robin Hood Golf Course in South Bend, Indiana. She was a Cub Scout den mother, Blue Bird and Campfire Girls leader, and participated in multiple school activities for her four children. She played on baseball and volleyball teams, was an accomplished golfer, and a member of the Bendix Girls Club in South Bend, IN. Millie loved to solve crossword puzzles and was an avid reader of nonfiction as well as novels. She was a notorious "back seat driver," great cook, life advisor/role model, comedian with an endearing sense of humor, and a kind, gentle, generous, courteous lady. Most of all, she was an exemplary and beloved wife and mother who could be counted on to always be there for her family when needed. Mildred and her husband celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary August 31, 2013. A cremation memorial service is pending in South Bend, Indiana.
