LAPORTE - Clement Anthony Markowski, 86, LaPorte, Indiana, passed away Thursday, August 6, 2009, peacefully at home surrounded by his family after a short battle with cancer. He is reunited with his loving wife of 62 years, Mary Catherine Markowski, who passed away December 7, 2008. Mass of Christian Burial be held at 10:30 a.m. (CST) Monday, August 10, 2009, at Queen of All Saints Catholic Church, with the Rev. Kevin McCarthy officiating. Burial will follow at St. Stanislaus Cemetery with full military services conducted by the American Legion Skwiat Post #451 and V.F.W. #2536. Visitation will be from 2-6 p.m. (CST) today in the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City, IN, and 10-10:30 a.m. (CST) Monday in Queen of All Saints Catholic Church. A memorial service will be conducted by American Legion Skwiat Post #451 and V.F.W. #2536 at 5:00 p.m. (CST) today in the chapel. He was born February 1, 1923, in South Bend, Indiana, to the late Clement J. and Lottie (Ladewski) Markowski. On May 18, 1946, in South Bend, Indiana, he married Mary Catherine Holubiak, who preceded him in death. Surviving are three daughters, Constance (Harry) Palmer of Watertown, MA, Katherine Markowski of LaPorte, IN, and Karen (Patrick) Nee of Whiting, IN; two sons, John Markowski of Michigan City, IN, and Clement "Gene" (Sue) Markowski of Appleton, WI; nine grandchildren, Clement Matthew "Matt" (Jackie), Benjamin, Blair, Brianna, Laura, Anthony and Christine Markowski, Kelly and Patrick Nee; three great-grandchildren, Jordan Hess, MacKenna Deutscher and Clement Jacob "Jake" Markowski; a sister, Joan Jaworski of South Bend, IN; and longtime friends, Ben Kaczmierzak, Bob and Pauline Malicoat. He was preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, Larry Jaworski and Henry Majcher. After graduating from South Bend Catholic High School, Clement attended Indiana University. He proudly served his country as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, and later joined the U.S. Air Force Reserves. He was employed by Burroughs Corporation, Falvey's Men's Store, and Jaymar Ruby where many lasting friendships were made. Clement was a member of Queen of All Saints Catholic Church where he served as an usher and sang in the choir, American Legion Skwiat Post #451, Moose Family Center #980, and the St. Joseph Young Men's Society. He was affectionately known as "Dziadzia" by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Contributions may be made to the family of Clement Markowski or to the donor's choice.
