SOUTH BEND - Edward J. Torzewski, 94, of South Bend, IN, passed away Wednesday, March 25, 2009, in the Sanctuary at St. Paul's, South Bend. Edward was born January 22, 1915, in South Bend, to John and Lottie (Mazurkiewicz) Torzewski. He was the owner of the former Westside Sports and Gifts. On February 14, 1953, Edward married Thelma Bogart, who preceded him in death on February 12, 1997. Surviving are his sisters, Florence J. (Torzewska) Kolbar of South Bend and Dorothy (Torzewska) Vertesich of South Bend; a brother, Richard F. (Dolores) Torzewski of Ocala, Florida; several nieces and nephews. Edward was a member of St. Hedwig Catholic Church, was graduated from St. Hedwig High School in 1933 as valedictorian of his class, was a member of PNA #83, American Legion Post 357, and served his country during WWII as a 1st lieutenant with the 27th Armored Infantry Battalion, 9th Armored Division, where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was an avid Notre Dame fan. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, March 27, 2009, 10 AM in St. Hedwig Catholic Church, South Bend. Visitation will be Friday from 9-10 AM (one hour prior to Mass) in St. Hedwig Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame, IN, with military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Hedwig Catholic Church, 331 S. Scott Street, South Bend, IN 46601.
