Ruth Schuell von Karowsky
Jan. 31, 1936 - Mar. 19, 2013 SOUTH BEND - Ruth Schuell von Karowsky passed away on March 19, 2013 at her home in Baltimore, MD. She was born in South Bend on January 31, 1936 to Franklin and Hazel Schuell of Schuell Nursery and Fence Company on Portage Road. Ruth is survived by her two children, Kristin von Karowsky-Nelson and Durand (Randy) von Karowsky. Ruth graduated from Central High School in the Class of 1954. She then graduated from Indiana University in Bloomington, and later received her Master of Fine Arts degree from Notre Dame. While living in South Bend, Ruth decided one day to paint the rather plain-looking fireplug by her home on Park Avenue. Using her artistic ability, she painted it as a Revolutionary War soldier. Ruth's paint-a-plug campaign was adopted as a symbol of the bi-centennial and spread rapidly across America. She was featured on the television programs 'What's my Line' and 'On the Road' with Charles Kuralt. Before retiring to Baltimore, Ruth taught art for many years in South Carolina, but she never forgot her many happy memories from South Bend. She loved her days at Camp Eberhart and Central High School, her pink Gothic Revival home, and her many dear friends. Cremation took place in Baltimore. A service will take place at her gravesite, in South Bend, at a later date.
