Cashmer Janowiak, 85, of 16890 Adams Road, Granger, died following a lengthy illness at 7:00 a.m. Saturday, April 16, 2005, in his residence.

Mr. Janowiak was born December 13, 1919, in Granger, to the late Valentine and Bernice (Grzegorek) Janowiak, and was a lifetime area resident.

On March 2, 1946, in South Bend, he married Loretta Kolanda, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Kathleen (Matthew) Derrick of South Bend, Sandra (Robert) Hutchins of St. Charles, Ill., and Linda (Ron) Marshall of Charlotte, N.C.; three sons, James (Mary Pat) Janowiak of San Antonio, Texas, and Timothy Janowiak and Joseph (Pamela) Janowiak, both of Granger; eight grandchildren, Mark (Sharon Hochstetler) Grove, Jeff (Alisa) Grove, Amy (Colin) Winter, Matthew Hutchins, Jeff (Meredith) Guyton, Jessica Janowiak, Cody Janowiak and Kelsey Janowiak; one great-grandson and one great-granddaughter; and one sister, Eleanor Gnott of South Bend.

He was preceded in death by a son, John Janowiak; a granddaughter, Jennifer Janowiak; three sisters, Helen Grabowski, Stella St. Germaine and Mary Buysse; and several infant brothers.

Mr. Janowiak retired in 1982 after owning several automotive parts stores for a number of years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II where he served in Europe and fought in many battles including the Battle of the Bulge with General George Patton and the Headquarters Battery 315th Field Artillery Battalion. For his service he was awarded a Purple Heart, the Silver Star and an EAME Theater Ribbon with four bronze stars. He was a longtime member of St. Pius X Church and VFW Post 360.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 20th, in St. Pius X Catholic Church, with Rev. William Schooler officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, South Bend. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today, April 19th, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road, where a parish Rosary will be recited at 4:00 p.m.
