Sept. 30, 1925 - May 27, 2013 SOUTH BEND - Dorothy Louise Sowinski, age 87, formerly of South Bend passed away May 27, 2013. She was born September 30, 1925 to Charles and Anna (Urlacher) Hummel of Pittsburgh, PA. She spent her early years in Pittsburgh and then moved to South Bend, IN where she married Sylvester J. Sowinski on May 11, 1946. They had four children: daughters, Christine (Patrick) Roberts of Williamsville and Judith McLein of South Bend; and sons, David (Nancy) Sowinski of Medical Lake, WA and Thomas Sowinski of South Bend. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Sylvester J. Sowinski, and sisters, Evelyn McCarthy, and Annamae Bauer. After her husband's death, she moved to Williamsville, MO to stay with her daughter Christine and her husband Patrick Roberts who lovingly cared for her until her death. Dorothy "Dot" will be remembered as friendly, kind, loving and always interested in the well-being of her family and others. Although she faced many challenges in her life, she overcame them all with dignity, grace, and determination. She was a big animal lover and was never without her pet dogs to love and look after. In her later years, mom took up drawing and painting, through which she made many new friends and found great enjoyment. She leaves behind her four children, six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, and many other family and friends. Mom will be greatly missed by family, friends and all who knew her. Visitation for Dorothy will be 9:00 am to 11:00 am on Monday, June 3, 2013 in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road, where a Funeral Service will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Monday, June 3, 2013. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Joseph County Humane Society, 2506 Grape Road, Mishawaka, Indiana 46645, in line with her love and kindness to animals and their wellbeing.
