LAPORTE - James H. Pilar Jr., age 85, of LaPorte, IN, passed away on May 27, 2013, at St. Anthony Inpatient Hospice in Michigan City, IN. James was born November 14, 1927, in North Judson, IN, to James H. Pilar Sr. and Agnes (Kalina) Pilar, who preceded him in death. He married Evelyn Krulik on October 15, 1949, in North Judson, IN, and then settled in Michigan City, IN. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Pilar of LaPorte, IN; daughters, Denice (Greg) Boyce of LaPorte, IN, and Sherry (Paul) Iwaszewski of New Carlisle, IN; grandchildren: Jennifer (Tim) Canfield of Burns Harbor, IN, Gretchen (Mike) Krivak of New Carlisle, IN, Gwendolyn (Brad) Nimtz of Niles, MI, Kim Iwaszewski of South Bend, IN, Cory Iwaszewski of South Bend, IN; great-grandchildren, Jeremy Canfield and Grace Krivak; sister, Adeline Kurpiel of Downers Grove, IL. James was preceded in death by sisters, Agnes Kucharski, Vlasta Nevels and Henrietta Matthews. James served his country during WW II in the US Navy. He was retired from Nipsco after 40 years. James was a member of First United Methodist Church of Michigan City for 60 years. He served as a police officer for Washington Park for 20 years, and volunteered at the VNA Hospice for 17 years. He was a lifelong member of American Legion John Franklin Miller Post #37 and a member of Michigan City Elks, having served as exalted ruler. James enjoyed traveling and vacationing. He was an avid gardener. Visitation for family and friends will be today, May 30, 2013, 4:00 ~ 8:00 PM at Geisen-Carlisle Funeral Home, located at 613 Washington St., Michigan City, IN, and on Friday, May 31, 2013, directly at First United Methodist Church, Michigan City, IN, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 31, 2013, at 11:00 AM at First United Methodist Church of Michigan City, located at 121 E. 7th St., with Reverend Dr. Gwendolyn Roberts officiating. Burial will follow at Carmel Cemetery, LaPorte, IN, with full military honors presented by American Legion John Franklin Miller Post #37. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church of Michigan City, IN, or St. Anthony Hospice 301 W. Homer St., Michigan City, IN.
