SOUTH BEND - Our Dad, Eugene "Gene" Piechocki, 82, went to be with God and our Mother following a brief illness. Dad passed away quietly with his loving children around him. Dad was born January 21, 1927 to the union of Adalbert and Martha (Holewczynski) Piechocki. He served his country in the United States Army. He was honorably discharged December 31, 1946. He married Evelyn Janiak on May 5, 1951. They had 36 loving years together prior to Mom's death on December 18, 1987. Together they had three children who survive; Linda (Thomas) Shuamber, Jr., Carol (Patrick) Killelea, and Gregory Piechocki, all living in South Bend. Dad leaves behind three grandchildren to cherish his memory; Sean Killelea of South Bend, Heather Piechocki of Carmel, IN and Ashley (Charles) Stockwell of Muncie, IN. Dad, also, had five step-grandchildren; Thomas L. Killelea, Tammy Romeo, Michele Helton and Katie Johnson. Zachary Shuamber preceded him in death on March 15, 1988. Dad has one great-grandson, Stephen Stockwell. Also surviving is his brother, Daniel (Laverne) Piechocki of Cold Spring, MN. Dad's friend and dancing partner for the last several years Loretta Futa, will cherish his memory always. Dad leaves behind many friends who will miss his joking personality and his presence at the Friday and Saturday night dances. Dad was employed as a tool and die maker for 43 years. He retired from Alumni Tool & Die in July, 1991 Dad was very proud of his Polish heritage. He never missed a dance when a Polish band came to town from Chicago. He would travel to Chicago or Minnesota when several bands gathered for a festival. On Friday and Saturday nights, you could find him on the dance floor doing the Chicago hop. In the Fall, it was football time cheering on the San Francisco 49ers or the Minnesota Vikings, especially during the years when his beloved Joe Montana was playing. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm on Sunday, July 12, 2009 in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road, South Bend. A Rosary will be prayed at 7:30 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Monday July 13, 2009 in Holy Family Catholic Church. Entombment will follow in Resurrection Gardens, St. Joseph Cemetery, South Bend. Visitation will also be from 9:00 am to 9:30 am in the Funeral Home prior to the Mass. Burial will follow in Resurrection Gardens, St. Joseph Cemetery, South Bend. Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's choice. We would like to thank Dr. John Mathis and his staff for the excellent care they provided our Dad during his illness. A special thank you to Joe Bleich, LCSW at St. Joseph's Medical Center for all the help and to the staff at Healthwin Hospital, N.W. section, 2nd floor, thank you for the care and compassion you showed with our Dad and with us. For those who are unable to attend the Funeral Liturgy, condolences for the family may be made at www.sjfh.net. As we sat by your side, we quietly watched you fade away God decided it was time for you to join our Mother, so He gently gathered you up to His side to take you to a better place free from pain and medication We gently help your hand as you slowly slipped away from us Even though we wanted to keep you here, we knew it was time for you to go Father in Heaven we send our Dad to you, take good care of him as we have tried to do Thank you for giving us our Dad and for helping him raise three loving children, and for the many lessons he has taught us over the years. Though we send him off with many tears and much sadness, we would never want him to come back to the suffering he left behind So God, please welcome Dad home and unite him with our Mom so they can watch over us. Linda (Piechocki) Shuamber December 13, 2008
