SOUTH BEND - Jerry R. Szweda, 77, of South Bend, passed away at 3:50 p.m. Sunday in Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. Mr. Szweda was born on April 9, 1933, in South Bend, and had resided in the area his lifetime. On May 9, 1953, in South Bend, he married the former Monica E. Kurpiewski, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Lynn M. Szweda and Lori A. Ur-banski, both of South Bend; and a son, Mark J. Szweda of South Bend. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Shane & Erin Cantu and Olivia Flanagan. One great-granddaughter, Lilliana Cantu, all whom he loved and cherished. A sister, Dorothy (William, deceased) Dyer of South Bend; and two brothers, Richard (June, deceased) Szweda of South Bend and Eugene (Geor-gianne) Szweda of Granger, IN. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Chester H. and Genevieve (Nowak) Szweda. Jerry was a 20-year vet-eran of the South Bend Police Department and he also retired from the City of South Bend Water Works and Indiana De-partment of Transportation (INDOT). Mr. Szweda's family and friends will miss him dearly and will be forever impacted by everything Jerry brought to their lives. He had a great passion for police work and was a member of the first K-9 Unit with his K-9 partner "Tim." Jerry retired as a Captain in the detective bureau. Most importantly, Jerry was a loving hus-band, father and grandfa-ther who cared deeply for his family and will be dearly missed by a loving family. He was also a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict. Jerry was a member of the South Bend Police FOP #36 and Christ the King Catholic Church. Cremation has taken place. In honor of Jerry's wishes, there will be no visitation hours or public services. A private funeral Mass will be said at Christ the King Catholic Church with family members only. The family request that all memorial contributions be made to the donor's choice. The HANLEY & SONS "Southwest Chapel" Fu-neral Home, located at West Ireland Road/Indiana 23, South Bend, handled arrange-ments and extends its deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers to the Szweda family.
