MISHAWAKA - Verna Gushwa, 96, of Mishawaka, passed away Sunday, July 24, 2016, at Tanglewood Trace. She was born July 7, 1920, in Galveston, TX, to the late Vern Layton and Amanda Rood. On August 1, 1953, she married Albert B. Gushwa, who died in 2001. She was also preceded in death by a brother, James Layton. Verna is survived by her son, Jerry Gushwa (Robin) of Granger; and 2 grandchildren, Alexandra and Tyson Gushwa; 3 step-grandchildren, Anne Pressel, Michelle Englebert and Jessica Mauer. Mrs. Gushwa retired from the South Bend Tribune where she worked for 20 years. Memorial services will be at a later date; cremation will be at the Welsheimer Crematory.
