SOUTH BEND - Michael J. Voynovich, 61, of Indianapolis, formerly of South Bend, passed away July 4th in his home surrounded by family. He was born February 18, 1951, in South Bend, to Pete and Phyllis Voynovich, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his sons, Michael Jr. and Matthew of Indianapolis; and his granddaughter, Gabriella of Indianapolis; sister, Barb (Wayne) Chevrie of South Bend; 2 nieces, Lori and Karla Chevrie of Indianapolis; and nephew, Nick (Danielle) Chevrie of South Bend. Mike was a proud member of the band "The Checkmates" in the 60s. He threw out his guitar pick and budding music career to play football for Riley High School and earned a 4-year scholarship to Western Michigan University. He was a true Bronco fan his whole life. He married Susie Hiles on Christmas Eve, 1977. She was the mother of his 2 sons. They were part-owner of Voyno's Tavern on Milburn in South Bend in the early 80s. Many good friends and fun times were had there, as well as many Serbian functions which they always attended. Mike was an avid golfer and passed that on to his 2 boys. He won several tournaments, his last being the 2010 SNF tourney. Michael was a wonderful son, father, brother, grandfather and uncle, who enjoyed family gatherings and many sporting events. We will miss him dearly but know he is in a better place with some wonderful people who passed before him. We love you! Visitation will be 4-8 pm on Monday, July 9th. Prayer service is at 7 pm at the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 S. Kemble Ave. Funeral Service will be at 11 am, with viewing 1 hr. prior to service on July 10th at Sts. Peter & Paul Serbian Orthodox Church. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sts. Peter & Paul Church or to St. Vincent Hospice. Zahoran Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. To leave an online condolence, visit www.Zahoran.com or our Facebook page.
