SOUTH BEND - Irene M. Kardasen, 88, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away at 8:25 a.m. Friday, September 16, 2016, in The Milton Home. Irene was born on December 15, 1927, in Clifton, New Jersey, to George and Mary (Seventko) Kardasen. She retired in 1985 from Memorial Hospital. Irene had been employed as a Nursing Instructor. She worked at Jersey City Medical Center from 1949-1950; Michael Reese Hospital, Chicago, Illinois, from 1950-1956; and Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana, from 1956-1985. Irene is survived by her brother, George Kardasen of Dalton, Massachusetts; two nephews, Richard (Misty) Kardasen of Dalton, Massachusetts, and Brian (Theresa) Kardasen of Hinsdale, Massachusetts; and her friend Virginia Durfee of Elkhart, Indiana. Irene was preceded in death by her parents, George and Mary Kardasen; her sister-in-law, Joan Kardasen; grandnephew, Joshua Kardasen; and a special friend, Ruth Petersen of South Bend. A visitation will take place from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Monday, September 19, 2016, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana. There will also be a visitation and Mass of Christian Burial at St. Michael's Cathedral, Passaic, New Jersey. Bizub-Quinlon Funeral Home in Clifton, New Jersey (973-777-4332), will be handling funeral arrangements in New Jersey. Irene received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Jersey City State Teachers College; her Nursing Diploma from Jersey City Medical Center School of Nursing; and her Master's in Nursing from the University of Chicago.
