Brother Edward Walter Wauchter C.S.C.
June 16, 1927 - Jan. 19, 2014
NOTRE DAME - Brother Edward Walter Wauchter, C.S.C., age 86, died on January 19, 2014, at Dujarie House in Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame, Indiana. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on June 16, 1927, the son of Walter and Eva (Thomas) Wauchter. He attended St. Francis Xavier Elementary School in Pittsburgh and then North Catholic High School, graduating in 1947. He worked for General Mills, Inc., as a statistician for about 2 years. In the fall of 1948 he followed a calling to the religious life and went to St. Joseph's Juniorate in Valatie, New York. In 1949, he began his novitiate year at St. Joseph's Novitiate in Rolling Prairie, Indiana, and pronounced his first vows as a Holy Cross Brother on February 2, 1950. Brother Edward began his college studies at St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas. In the fall of 1952 he was assigned to teach for a year at Mount Carmel Grade School in Bronx, New York. The following year he returned to Austin to complete his studies at St. Edward's University (graduating with a B.A. degree in 1954) and also found the time to teach at the high school on the campus of the University for a year. He then taught for a year at schools in New Orleans, Louisiana, Bronx, NY, and South Bend, Indiana. He then spent 9 years on the faculty at Holy Trinity High School in Chicago, followed by teaching at Gilmour Academy, LeMans Academy, and Holy Cross High School in River Grove, Illinois. In 1976, Edward joined the faculty at St. Edward High School in Lakewood, Ohio, where he spent the next 26 years, mainly as a librarian. In 2002 he became a resident at Columba Hall at Notre Dame, although in the late winter/spring months he would enjoy a warmer climate living at the Holy Cross priests' lodge in Cocoa Beach, Florida. In 2013 he took up residence at Schubert Villa and Dujarie House. Edward was a very conscientious person, particularly about his health. He was extremely neat and organized. He enjoyed long walks the many years he spent in Lakewood, Ohio, and especially on the Notre Dame campus and South Bend. He appeared to be a very quiet person, but was one who made friends and who carried on correspondence with members of his family and friends. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 24, 2014, at Our Lady of Holy Cross Chapel (within the Dujarie House facility) from 9:30 to 11:00 am on the grounds of Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame. The Mass of Resurrection will then follow with interment afterward at St. Joseph's Cemetery of the Village. Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Memorial contributions, in honor of Brother Edward Wauchter, C.S.C., to support the mission and ministries of the Brothers may be sent to: Brothers of Holy Cross, Office of Development, P.O. Box 460, Notre Dame, IN 46556. Published in South Bend Tribune on Jan. 23, 2014
