SOUTH BEND - Giacomo "James" Puzzello, 76, passed away peacefully Thursday at 7:42am at the South Bend Hospice House. He was born on October 29, 1938 to the late Domemico and Maria Rosa (Cugliari) Puzzello in Monterosso, Calabria, in Italy. His father had lived and worked in Chicago for five years and enlisted in the US Army, serving in WW I. As a result of his service he became a US citizen. His father returned to Italy, married and raised his family there. Consequently, Giacomo became a citizen from birth. Giacomo came to this country at age 24 in 1963, after living several years in Rome. On June 11, 1964 in Grayslake, IL he married Ann Baumgartner. He worked at Gilbert's Men's Store for 12 years. In 1975 he opened Puzzello's Supermarket on Hill and Cedar starting as an Italian grocery and ultimately becoming an Italian restaurant. He retired in 2005 from the South Bend Water Works. "Jim", as his friends knew him, was always a fun loving guy and enjoyed politics. He worked on many local campaigns including his wife's. He was a longtime member of St. Joseph Parish and the Italian American Club. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Ann of South Bend; a daughter Roseanne (Jan) Wishart of Indianapolis, IN and two sons; Paul D. (Oksana) Puzzello of Indianapolis and Daniel G. (Margaret) Puzzello Ft. Wayne, IN. Giacomo enjoyed the company of eight grandchildren. Four siblings are living in Italy; a sister Marianna (Giuseppe) of Monterosso, Italy and three brothers, Giuseppe (Lilia) Puzzello, Salvatore (Tiziana) Puzzello and Franco (Maria) Puzzello. His brother Antonio (the late Mary) Puzzello lives in Mt. Prospect, IL, A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Giacomo on Tuesday May 26th at 11:00am at St. Joseph Catholic Church at the corner of Hill and LaSalle, in South Bend, Rev. Kevin Russeau, CSC, Pastor, officiating. Friends may call from 3-6pm Monday at the McGann Hay Funeral Homes, University Chapel, 2313 E. Edison Rd. near Ironwood.
